The Strip
A destination in itself, without actually being technically part of Las Vegas, the Strip offers everything which defines excess, glamour, entertainment and showbiz on a huge scale. A couple of miles south of downtown the "Strip" begins; a street lined with the kind of large casino-hotels and shopping malls that people on this side of the Atlantic are more familiar with seeing in a movie – “The Hangover” springs to mind.
In our opinion the Las Vegas Strip is great fun and definitely worth visiting, be it as a holiday in itself or as part of an adventure on the West Coast of America. If you are driving in, try to avoid the peak weekend hours – the M25 around London will have never felt so good!
The Strip is a 24 hour place, so set your own schedule – maybe visiting some of the key landmarks; Fremont Street, Venetian, Wynn Las Vegas (both former sites of classic Vegas hotels), The Mirage Hotel & Casino, Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Luxor. Get the iconic photo of the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign, hang out with the hedonists.
Remember Las Vegas is a desert – drink water and wear sunscreen. Also our top tips include being mindful of using electronic devices in the casinos, you may find yourself being upended onto the street.
If you visited Las Vegas during the 80’s and early 90’s you will be familiar with the eat-all-day-breakfast and the enormous buffets which rendered you motionless for the rest of the day. They are less of a draw in Las Vegas these days in the new slimmed down USA – quality is still good, but demand has dictated more fine dining. Less of a cow on the fork, more of a well-seasoned and cooked steak.
