Eating, Drinking & Nightlife in Hawaii
Eating
Interestingly, alongside the abundance of fresh seafood, spam is readily available – the locals love it!
Of course, you will find some more authentic Hawaiian foods as well, typically served at a lu‘au (feast). Be sure to try such classics as lau lau, which is pork or fish steamed in taro leaves, kalua pig which is pork wrapped in banana leaves and steamed with the resulting product similar to pulled pork, or poi which is mashed taro root. Tropical fruits can also be found everywhere, such as guavas, papaya and mangos.
Hawai‘i boasts a huge food truck culture - offering a fantastic way to sample local produce, support Hawaiian businesses and meet local people. Additionally, Hawai‘i is associated with a range of food enjoyed worldwide - poké bowls, which were invented in Hawai‘i, and Hawaiian pizzas, although they are not actually Hawaiian!
Drinking
Beer is popular here and there are plenty of fantastic brewpubs dotted across the islands. If you head to Downtown Honolulu and Chinatown, you’ll also find some great bars, where you may choose to try Hawai‘i's signature cocktail - the Mai Tai.
