Flights and transfers

Direct and indirect flights are available plus regional departures are possible; direct flights take just less than 12 hours. Onward flights are also possible from San Diego Airport. San Diego International Airport (SAN) is located only three miles from the city and is a busy but well-organised hub for a number of national carriers. The proximity to the city means the airport is in a highly populated area and flights departures are only legally allowed between 6.30am – 11pm; outside of these times incurs a huge fine.

If you have pre-booked transfer arrangements / tours with us you will be met on arrival by our Tropical Sky representative who will guide you to your transfer vehicle. If you have pre-booked car hire follow the instructions given on your booking itinerary. It takes around 10 minutes from the airport to downtown San Diego and the Sante Fe depot from which you can make onward journeys via public transportation.

Visa requirements

Passports must be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the return date to the UK. USA entry procedures have changed and UK travellers to the USA under the Visa Waiver Scheme must now complete the I-94W form online using the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) system. All travellers should check full entry requirements prior to travel by visiting the FCO website or by contacting the relevant embassy.

Language

San Diego was initially settled by Spanish explorers and its proximity to Mexico means Spanish and Mexican influences are heavy within the city, particularly within the language. Although English is the primary language spoken, you’ll find that many residents maintain their mother tongue of Spanish, Italian, Filipino and other languages.

Transportation

By car: We recommend renting a car for the duration of your stay. An easy to negotiate network of highways and interstate roads are well sign posted, and the I-8 and I-5 connects San Diego to the main road networks. San Diego is spread out so a car is by far the easiest way to get around.

By taxi: Taxis are readily available in San Diego; just ensure that the taxi is insured and that, therefore, you are. Many hotels have taxi stands which you simply join – there is hardly any waiting.

By bus: San Diego is well served by trains and buses bringing people in to town and across the city. Try them for the experience at least! The Coaster commuter rail system runs along the San Diego County coastline, linking together most of the coastal cities and towns of North San Diego County with Old Town and Downtown San Diego. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner is similar but more expensive. Between Oceanside and Escondido and all stops in between, take the Sprinter. San Diego Trolley operates east and south to the USA-Mexico border. The bus service is called the MTS.

On foot: You will be unlikely to walk between attractions given the vast distances between them; there are lots of stunning coastal paths which trail the beaches which are well worth strolling through.

By bike: This is more destination cycling than cycling between attractions, as San Diego sprawls – great for an afternoon activity to take in the views and enjoy the sunshine though.

Currency

American Dollar; credit cards are accepted in hotels and many restaurants and shops.

Electricity

120V 60 Hz – all plugs are a flat blade 2 pin.
